Detailed Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Transfer to Thimphu & Cultural Sightseeing | Stay in Thimphu

Paro to Thimphu: 54 km | Approximate driving time: 1 hour
Altitude at Thimphu: 2300m

Welcome to Bhutan! Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, complete your Bhutan visa formalities and meet your dedicated Bhutan tour guide from Access Bhutan Tours, your local Bhutan travel operator. Begin your scenic drive to Thimphu, passing through Chunzom—the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers. Enjoy a short walk on the historic suspension bridge overlooking the 15th-century iron chain bridge.

Check into your hotel in Thimphu and enjoy lunch before exploring key cultural sites:

  • Tashichhodzong – Bhutan’s majestic fortress and seat of government and religion.
  • Takin Preserve – Home to Bhutan’s national animal, the rare Takin.
  • Archery Match at Changlimithang Stadium – Witness Bhutan’s national sport in action (weekends/holidays).
  • Centenary Farmers’ Market – Experience vibrant local life and fresh produce (Wed–Sun).

Dinner at your hotel or a local restaurant in Thimphu. Overnight stay in Thimphu.


Day 2: Thimphu Sightseeing – Drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass | Stay in Punakha

Thimphu to Punakha: 71 km | Driving time: 2 hours
Altitude at Dochula Pass: 3140m | Altitude at Punakha: 1300m

After breakfast, visit:

  • Buddha Point (Kuenselphodrang) – Home to the colossal 51.5m Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking Thimphu Valley.
  • National Memorial Chorten – A spiritual monument honoring Bhutan’s third king.

Drive to Punakha via the scenic Dochula Pass with panoramic Himalayan views. Stop at the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang Monastery, built by the Queen Mother.

After lunch in Lobesa, enjoy a short walk through lush paddy fields to Chhimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple known as the Divine Madman’s Monastery.

Visit Punakha Dzong, perched between the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. Later, walk the iconic 350m suspension bridge draped with prayer flags, connecting Punakha town and the Dzong.

Dinner and overnight stay in Punakha.


Day 3: Punakha Cultural Hike – Return to Thimphu | Stay in Thimphu

Punakha to Thimphu: 71 km | Driving time: 2 hours
Altitude: 2300m

Morning hike to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendup Nunnery with breathtaking views of Punakha and Wangdue valleys. Then, enjoy a peaceful one-hour walk to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Lhakhang, a beautifully decorated temple.

Return to Thimphu via Dochula Pass. Afternoon sightseeing in Thimphu includes:

  • School of Traditional Painting of Arts and Crafts – Observe students mastering Bhutanese traditional arts.
  • National Textile Museum – Discover Bhutan’s rich weaving heritage.
  • Bhutan Postal Museum – Explore Bhutan’s communication history and create personalized postage stamps.
  • Craft Bazaar – Shop authentic Bhutanese handicrafts from local artisans.

Evening free to explore Thimphu town. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.


Day 4: Thimphu to Paro – Paro Valley Sightseeing | Stay in Paro

Distance: 54 km | Driving time: 1 hour
Altitude at Paro: 2200m

After breakfast, visit:

  • National Museum (Ta Dzong) – Home to Bhutan’s rich cultural artifacts.
  • Enjoy a 2 km forest hike to Zuri Dzong, passing Gonsaka Lhakhang with panoramic views of Paro valley.
  • Drive to Dzongdrakha Goempa, known as the “mini-Taktsang,” set on cliff edges with fascinating legends.

Return to Paro town to visit Rinpung Dzong, a historic fortress and monastery. Walk across the traditional cantilever Rinpung Bridge.

Dinner and overnight in Paro.


Day 5: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang) | Stay in Paro

Altitude: 3000m

Start your day with a 20-minute drive to the base of the world-famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Enjoy a 1 to 1.5-hour uphill hike to the viewpoint for stunning photos of the cliffside monastery. Continue hiking to the monastery itself, followed by a scenic descent with lunch at the viewpoint cafeteria.

In the afternoon, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse for a cultural experience and relax with a traditional hot stone bath, known for its healing minerals and therapeutic benefits.

Enjoy a homemade Bhutanese dinner with your host family. Overnight stay in Paro.


Day 6: Departure from Paro

After breakfast, your tour guide from Access Bhutan Tours, your reliable Bhutan tour agent, will escort you to Paro International Airport for your onward flight.
